Montessori-Inspired Alligator Unit Using Free Printables

By Deb Chitwood from Living Montessori Now

Alligators are fun to study ... and the greater than, less than alligator activities are some of my favorites! They're so helpful for children who have difficulty remembering how to place the greater than and less than symbols.

At Living Montessori Now, I have a list of free alligator printables, including lots of greater than, less than alligator printables. The free printables include my latest subscriber freebie (a Montessori-inspired alligator pack, which has some special greater than/less than alligator photo symbols).

Here, I'm sharing ideas for using free alligator printables to create Montessori-inspired activities. You'll find many activities for preschoolers through first graders throughout the year along with presentation ideas in my previous posts at PreK + K Sharing

You'll also find ideas for using free printables to create activity trays here: How to Use Printables to Create Montessori-Inspired Activities. At Living Montessori Now, I have a post with resource links of Free Printables for Montessori Homeschools and Preschools

Montessori Shelves with Alligator-Themed Activities

Montessori Shelves with Alligator-Themed Activities

My shelves with alligator-themed activities include a free alligator culture card designed by The Montessori Company. You’ll also find Montessori-inspired alligator numbers, letters, spinners, and greater than/less than alligator symbols (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber).

I have a number of alligator books, both non-fiction and fiction, for our alligator unit. We always enjoy the National Geographic Readers, such as this month's Alligators and Crocodiles. I love the variety of visual facts about alligators in Who Lives in an Alligator Hole? by Anne Rockwell and Alligators and Crocodiles by Gail Gibbons.

Free Printable: Stomping Grounds of the American Alligator from Tim Van De Vall. I added this printable to our shelf along with our Hugg-a-Planet Earth to reinforce the books' information about where alligators live.

You could mix your alligator-themed activities among your shelves according to curriculum area. Or you could have a special alligator area something like the one pictured. My shelves this month have a mixture of skill levels. If you’re a homeschooler, just choose the activities that work for your child’s interests and ability levels. If you don’t have room for all the activities you’d like to do, just rotate them.

Alligator Culture Card (on Shelf with Alligator Books)

Alligator Culture Card with Alligator Books

I'm happy to share with you this awesome hand-painted alligator culture card from The Montessori Company. You can use it on your shelves to introduce an alligator unit. I’m hosting the free printable as an instant download at Living Montessori Now. You can always access the free alligator culture card here

The description says: “Alligators are reptiles that live in the marshes of North America and China. They silently stalk prey in the water or bask in the sun during the day.”

Lady with the Alligator Purse Book and Literature-Based Activity

The Lady with the Alligator Purse Book and Sequencing Cards

Free Printable: Lady with the Alligator Purse Song-Themed Printable and Activity from Mumma Diaries This isn't on my shelves yet. First, I'm featuring the non-fiction alligator books. This is one of the activities I'll be rotating onto my shelves during the month.

The Lady with the Alligator Purse is just a silly and fun book! I'm planning to use the cards as a sequencing activity while my 3½-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, and I sing the song.

A is for Alligator Basket and Salt Writing Tray

Free Printable: Alligator Clothespin Puppet/Fine-Motor Activity from Delia Creates

Free Printable: A is for Alligator by The Educators Spin On It at Teacher's Notebook Alligator Basket

Isn't the clothespin alligator adorable?!! With the printable, it was easy to prepare, too! I got the basket from Montessori Services. I used small objects that begin with the /ă/ sound and go with the chant on the card. I didn't want to use "airplane," so I changed the word to "ambulance" and used a Micro Machine ambulance.

If you'd like ideas for teaching phonics, check out my DIY Beginning Montessori Phonics post.

For the salt writing tray, I used the wooden tray from the Melissa & Doug Lace and Trace Shapes. You can use whatever tray or container work best for you, though. I simply colored salt by putting some Wilton gel food coloring in a plastic bag with the salt and shaking it until it was mixed thoroughly. I wanted it to be blue for water.

Reptiles Singular and Plural Reptile Singular and Plural Basket Free Printable: Reptiles and Amphibians Singular and Plural Cards from Every Star Is Different

For this activity, I used a Montessori Services basket and Safari Ltd. reptiles (from a variety of TOOBs).

This is a fun, hands-on way to introduce reptiles to young children.

Reptile Singular and Plural Sorting

I used a Montessori Services rug on the floor for the layout.  This is just one way you can use the cards. For younger preschoolers, you can place the Safari Ltd. figures on the rug and then have the child find the matching card for each figure. After that, you could say, "Can you find more alligators?" and so on.

With children who read, you can use this as a reading lesson in singular and plural. Of course, you can cut the cards apart to make Montessori 3-part cards.

Montessori-Inspired Alligator Booklet Reptile Singular and Plural Basket Free Printable: All About Alligators Printables from Welcome to Mommyhood

This was so easy to prepare! I just printed and laminated the pages, punched a hole in each page, and added a binder ring. There are a number of free alligator printables at Welcome to Mommyhood.

I chose to make a homemade booklet because Zoey loves those. This one has lots of information along with interesting alligator photos.

Counting Alligators Game Counting Alligators Game

Free Printable: Alligator Numbers and Alligator Spinner (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)

For this activity, I used a  Multicraft tray and a Bambu condiment cup to hold 10 Safari Ltd. Good Luck Mini alligators. (Yes, the are only 9 in the cup, but that's because one had wandered off before I took the photo. I didn't realize it until after my photo shoot was finished. There are now 10 in the cup ready for the activity!)

Note: You can get the Good Luck Mini alligators on Amazon, although you'll find the best price at Alison's Montessori

Alligator Addition Game Alligator Addition Game For this activity, I used a  Multicraft tray and a Bambu condiment cup to hold 10 Safari Ltd. Good Luck Mini alligators. The alligator arrow is simply taped onto the paper brad/paper-clip spinner.

Again, you can get the Good Luck Mini alligators on Amazon, although you'll find the best price at Alison's Montessori

Working with Hands-on Alligator Addition
This is a simple way to introduce addition. With hands-on objects, it's a great way to add interest to counting activities for preschoolers who are comfortable with other counting activities.

Greater Than, Less Than Alligator Math with Alligator Photo Symbols and Greater Than Gator Chant

This activity is on my shelf, but I'll be introducing in my post at Living Montessori Now on Tuesday!

Alligator Writing or Dictation Tray Alligator Writing or Dictation Tray

Free Printables: Alligator Writing or Dictation Pages (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)

This is always so easy to prepare! I used a Multicraft tray, the printables, a pencil, and a pencil sharpener for an added practical life activity. Advanced preschoolers on up can write their own story, while younger preschoolers can dictate a story for you to write. They could use either printable: "What do you know about alligators?" or "Tell about your about your experiences with alligators, or tell an alligator story."

Montessori-Inspired Zoo Activities Using Free Printables

By Deb Chitwood from Living Montessori Now

I'm so excited today! I have Montessori-inspired activities for a popular theme with young children ... zoo animals. At Living Montessori Now, I have a list of free zoo printables. The free printables include my latest subscriber freebie (a Montessori-inspired zoo pack), which is now expanded to cover additional concepts and a wider age range!

Here I'm sharing a number of Montessori-inspired activities using the free printables. These are great ways to complement a trip to the zoo ... a perfect warm-weather field trip!

You'll find many activities for preschoolers through first graders throughout the year along with presentation ideas in my previous posts at PreK + K Sharing. You'll also find ideas for using free printables to create activity trays here: How to Use Printables to Create Montessori-Inspired Activities

Shelves with Zoo-Themed Activities

Shelves with Zoo-Themed Activities

My shelves with zoo-themed activities include a free hand-painted printable zoo culture card designed by The Montessori Company. You’ll also find Montessori-inspired zoo numbers and letters (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)

The books on my top shelf are all Montessori friendly. They're Zoo by Gail Gibbons, Life-Size Zoo, More Life-Size Zoo, and A Children's Zoo. My 3-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, especially loves Life-Size Zoo and More Life-Size Zoo. Another favorite zoo book that she's loved for a long time is One Gorilla (a Montessori-friendly counting book with fascinating realistic pictures. It's in our book basket).

I also have a handmade book: Little Letter "Z" Book on the middle shelf.  It uses a free printable: Little Letter "Z" Book from The Measured Mom. Check out my "Simple Easily Rotated Activity to Teach Letter Sounds to Toddlers and Preschoolers" to learn how we use these letter books, which Zoey loves.

You could mix your zoo-themed activities among your shelves according to curriculum area. Or you could have a special zoo area something like the one pictured. My shelves this month have a mixture of skill levels, although they're mainly for 3-5 year old pre-readers.

You'll find a couple of more advanced activities below. If you’re a homeschooler, just choose the activities that work for your child’s interests and ability levels. If you don’t have room for all the activities you’d like to do, just rotate them.

Zoo Culture Card (on Shelf with Life-Size Zoo and More Life-Size Zoo Books)

Zoo Culture Card with Life-Size Zoo Book and More Life-Size Zoo Book

I'm happy to share with you a beautiful hand-painted zoo culture card from The Montessori Company. You can use it on your shelves to introduce a zoo theme. I’m hosting the free printable as an instant download at Living Montessori Now. You can always access the free zoo culture card here. The description says: “At the zoo we can learn about animals from all across the world and see them up close safely.”

Animal Pattern Matching Animal Pattern Matching

Free Printable: Animal Patterns from Mumma Diaries

For this activity, I simply used a Montessori Services basket with the printables - super easy! I did omit the cow and ladybug patterns because of the zoo theme.

For a toddler, it would be wonderful to use this activity with large Schleich animals or Safari Ltd. animals to match each of the patterns.

Wildlife “I Have, Who Has” Game Wildlife "I Have, Who Has" Game

Free Printable: Wildlife “I Have, Who Has” Game from PreKinders

This was another super-easy activity to prepare. I just used the printable along with a Montessori Services basket. Games like this can be a fun way for children to work together at home or in a classroom.

Subtract the Animals at the Zoo Subtract the Animals at the Zoo Tray Free Printable: Zoo Pack Update (part 5) from 3 Dinosaurs. There are also printables for counting the zoo animals (perfect for younger children), adding the zoo animals, and greater than/less than in the pack. For multiple ages, you could have more than one of the printables on the tray.

For this activity, I used the subtract the animals printable, 10 animals from the Safari Ltd. Wild TOOB, a Montessori Services basket for the animals, and a small bamboo condiment cup for the numbers.

Zoo-Themed Teen Number Cards with Montessori Bead Bars

Zoo-Themed Teen Number Cards with Montessori Bead Bars

Free Printable: Zoo Animal Numbers (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)

For this activity, I used a piece of felt for a table mat and bead bars from the decanomial box in a Montessori Services basket. (My bead bars, which I love, are from Alison's Montessori. You can get them on Amazon, although I haven't personally used materials from those companies.)

You could make this into a game by placing the number cards in a stack upside down. Then the child draws a number card and matches the bead bars.

Zoo-Themed Teen Number Card with Montessori Bead Bars

This is a great extension for children who are working on place value using Montessori bead materials.

Letter Z Object Basket with Mystery Bag and Blindfold Letter Z Object Basket with Mystery Bag and Blindfold Free Printables: Zebra Letters for Letter Z Object Basket (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)

I used the "z" sandpaper letter, another tactile letter "z," a magnetic letter "z," a sandpaper numeral 0, a zebra, a zipper, and a laminated photo of Zoey  for the/z/ sound. Zoey has so much fun with this activity!

Using Letter Z Objects with Mystery Bag and Blindfold

If you'd like ideas for teaching phonics, check out my DIY Beginning Montessori Phonics post.

We used a Montessori mystery bag and blindfold for interest and to work on the stereognostic sense. I got the basket, mystery bag, and blindfold from Montessori Services.

Zoo-Themed Beginning Sounds and Word Building Zoo-Themed Word Building Basket

Free Printable: Zoo Pack Update (part 6) from 3 Dinosaurs

Free Printable: My 1" Movable Alphabet (instant download available in manuscript, D'Nealian, or cursive)

For this activity, I used a Montessori Services basket and a small bamboo condiment cup for the letters. This is a fun hands-on way to focus on beginning sounds and word building.

I cut out 4 of the easiest words to build. After simply identifying the beginning sound for each picture, the child will have built a word!

Vertebrate Classification with Safari Ltd. Figures Vertebrate Classification Tray with Safari Ltd Figures Free Printable: We’re Going to the Zoo Unit Study and Lapbook by Ami Brainerd at Homeschool Share

For this activity, I used a multicraft tray, the pieces from the printable cut apart, and 5 different types of vertebrates. I used figures from the Safari Ltd. Rainforest TOOB plus a fish from the Safari Ltd. Rainforest TOOB

Older children could have a number of different species to match while younger children can match figures such as the ones pictured that are obvious matches although not necessarily the same type of fish, bird, etc.

Vertebrate Classification Layout with Safari Ltd Figures

Zoey really loved this activity and enjoyed having me read the different attributes of each classification.

Zoo Creative Writing Zoo Animal Creative Writing Tray Free Printable: Zoo Creative Writing Printables (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)

For this activity, I used a multicraft tray, the printables, a pencil, and a pencil sharpener for an added practical life activity. Advanced preschoolers on up can write their own story, while younger preschoolers can dictate a story for you to write. They could use the "Tell about your favorite zoo animal," or "Tell about your trip to the zoo," after a zoo trip.

Farm Fun in Pre-K

Hi! I'm Ayn and I am a Ga. Pre-K teacher, serving 4 and 5 year olds in an inclusive setting. I share my classroom adventures on my blog, little illuminations.

We recently learned about farms and farm life in Pre-K. We had a lot of hands on fun and even had some special visitors from the farm!

One of the kids in my class has pet chickens, so his family brought a couple for us to meet. We learned about how they eat, and all about their eggs.

We talked about cows and made some fresh butter. It is so easy and incredibly delicious! Usually most of the kids hesitate to try it at first, but after they do, they can't get enough!

I added this little sensory bin filled with timothy hay, toy farm animals and a barn made from a tissue box and silo from a paper towel roll.

I found this rhyme a couple of years ago online and made an anchor chart to practice rhyming and onsets of farm vocabulary.

We also made lists of animals, plants, people, vehicles/equipment and other things found on the farm. As we read about farm life the children offered suggestions of items to add to the lists. I don't have a picture of the final chart, but after we finished most of the lists, we made a cute chart to hang in writing with all of the suggestions.

In our art center, I made a couple of paper plate farm animals and left some plates and paper bags, feathers and paper shapes as an invitation to create some animals.

We used puppets to retell some of our favorite farm books and songs. Mrs. Wishy Washy by Joy Cowley and Old McDonald were definite favorites!

Here is a few pictures of some changes to our dramatic play area I have done in the past, featured in my post here called "Setting The Scene For Dramatic Play".

I also added these pool noodle horses to our centers for play. I posted them here in the post "Pool Noodle Ponies: DIY Hobby Horses".

My friend Laura Balma Eldredge has a great post called "Down On The Farm In Preschool" with more great ideas for farm fun! Be sure to check it out!

We usually go to the farm when studying this unit but due to some other things going on, we had to postpone our visit until the spring. If you'd like to read more about some of our farm visits, check out these posts:
