Montessori-Inspired Car Activities Using Free Printables

By Deb Chitwood from Living Montessori Now

My son was obsessed with vehicles, so I know first-hand how powerful vehicle learning activities can be.

So today, I'm focusing on hands-on learning activities with cars. You'll find LOTS of free car printables in my Free Car Printables and Montessori-Inspired Car Activities. Here, I'm sharing some Montessori-inspired car activities using free printables for preschoolers through first graders.

You'll find many activities for preschoolers through first graders throughout the year along with presentation ideas in my previous posts at PreK + K Sharing. You'll also find ideas for using free printables to create activity trays here: How to Use Printables to Create Montessori-Inspired Activities

At Living Montessori Now, I have a post with resource links of Free Printables for Montessori Homeschools and Preschools

Car Color Matching Activity Car Color Match Activity  Free Printable: Car Color Match from Childcareland

There are 12 colors in the printable, but I use the 11 colors that match Montessori color box 2. You could just use the 3 primary colors or whatever colors you want your child to work with.

Free Printable: Montessori Color Matching Cards from Montessori Print Shop

For this activity, I used a Multicraft tray, Montessori Services basket, and a small bamboo condiment cup to hold the pieces.

Car Color Match Layout

For the layout, I'd just lay out one column of color tablets and then have the child match the second column (unless color tablets haven't been presented before. If not, I'd give the introductory color tablet presentation). Then the child can match the colored cars to the color matching cards (color tablets) and finally add the colored circles to the cars. (Note: For our floor layouts, I always use a Montessori Services hemmed work rug.)

Highway Shapes Highway Shapes Free Printable: Highway Shape Cards (or highway letter or number cards) from Making Learning Fun If you'd prefer highway letters, check out the ones at Making Learning Fun or the ones linked to in my post at Living Montessori Now

This is awesome! You could just use basic shapes such as circle, triangle, and square. Or reinforce shapes like ellipse (called "oval" in the printable), trapezoid, and pentagon. There aren't all 10 Montessori metal inset shapes, but there are quite a few.

I used different colors of Micro Machines. We still had the Micro Machines from when my now 31-year-old son was little. He loved them too much to give them up! If you can find them, they're perfect for this activity.

Trapezoid Highway

You could make a green dot with 1/4" color control label dots to show where to start driving (tracing the shape).

Spelling with Car Movable Alphabet

Movable Alphabet Spelling Basket with a Car Theme  Free Printable: Car Movable Alphabet (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password ... or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you're already a subscriber)

I just used some Montessori Services language objects, which can be purchased individually or in the starter set. My basket is a Montessori Services basket

Movable Alphabet Spelling with a Car Theme

You'll find activities using Montessori Services language objects with a similar layout. The car movable alphabet is especially helpful for a car theme or for vehicle lovers in general. Because children can write (spell) before they can read, many children will be able to hear the sounds needed in a word and add the movable alphabet letters even if they can't read yet. So this will often work with children who just know phonetic sounds for letters. It's great for readers, too! Just adapt the difficulty of objects for your child.

Beginning Reading - Race Car Blending Beginning Reading - Race Car Blending Basket Free Printable: Race Car Blending (CVC, digraphs, blends) by Engage2Inspire at Teachers Pay Teachers

I think this is totally cool ... such a great idea for reinforcing blending sounds to read words. Many children have difficulty with that part of learning to read. This is super easy to prepare. I just printed out and laminated the printable and added a Micro Machine race car (a larger race car might work if you set your printer at 125% in landscape). I love that there are a number of different levels for this activity, although it's most effective with children just learning to blend.

Beginning Reading - Race Car Blending Activity

To do this activity, I would have the child "warm up" the car slowly and say each letter sound as he or she drives the car over it. Then I'd have the child go faster and faster each time, saying the sounds faster and faster until the word is clear. For a child who can't yet blend sounds, you could say the sounds yourself while your child moves the race car until the word is obvious. I'll have a post tomorrow at Living Montessori Now with more extensions for this printable!

Montessori-Inspired Train Activities Using Free Printables

By Deb Chitwood from Living Montessori Now

I've had trains on the brain a lot lately. Not only is my 2-year-old granddaughter in love with Thomas the train (and trains in general), but the Christmas season is always a natural time to think of trains.

You'll find lots of free train printables in my post today at Living Montessori Now. Here, I'm sharing some Montessori-inspired train activities using free printables for preschoolers through first graders.

You'll find many activities for preschoolers through first graders throughout the year along with presentation ideas in my previous posts at PreK + K Sharing. Thomas the Train Puzzle Thomas the Train Puzzle

Free Printable: Thomas and Friends Puzzle from Thomas and Friends

I used a large plastic tray from Montessori Services.

Thomas and Friends has 31 free printable puzzles. I love that they give a simple way for Thomas fans to work on puzzle skills at a variety of levels. With toddlers, you can laminate and use the uncut printable as a control chart or background for the puzzle. Older children can put the puzzles together without the control chart. Children who are very skilled at solving puzzles could sort out and put together more than one puzzle.

Polar Express Train Track Cutting Practice

Polar Express Train Track Cutting Practice

Free Printable: Train Track Cutting Practice from the Polar Express Mega Pack by 123 Homeschool 4 Me

This was super easy to prepare. It simply involved printing out the printable on cardstock (which is easier for young children to cut than paper). I love the fun and creative printable for cutting practice.

Magnetic Train Shapes Tracing Activity

Magnetic Train Shapes Tracing Activity

Free Printable: Train Shapes from Zoomin’ Movin’ Alphabet Letter Tt by Royal Baloo

I used the Melissa and Doug Magnetic Chalk Dry Erase Board (with chalk and eraser) for this activity. I also used a Montessori Services basket to hold the train shapes.

After printing out, laminating, and cutting out the shapes, I added a piece of magnetic strip to each shape. This activity can be used as both a way to reinforce the names of shapes as well as a pre-writing activity similar to the Montessori metal insets. After using the magnets to attach each shape, the child could use the chalk to trace around the shapes.

Number Train

Number Train Tray

Free Printable: Number Train by Sara from All Things with Purpose at Sugar Bee Crafts

The size of this learning activity adds extra interest. Each numbered train car is on an 8 1/2 x 11" piece of cardstock. It couldn't be much easier to prepare. I just had to print out and laminate each page.

Number Train Layout

Beginning Letter Sound Train

I used some inexpensive sandpaper letters I had from my master's degree school placement. You could use sandpaper letters or other tactile letters to reinforce the letter sound before putting together the letter sound train.

Beginning Letter Sound Train Layout

I used a Montessori Services rug for the layout. You can find resources on how to introduce Montessori phonics in my DIY beginning Montessori phonics post

Polar Express Telling Time Train

Many children today have difficulty reading an analog clock. An activity like this one can provide some of the much-needed practice. The printable is actually for matching clocks by drawing lines. I like to cut apart printables to make hands-on activities like this activity to match digital and analog clocks.

Montessori-Inspired Construction Vehicle Activities Using Free Printables

Free Construction Vehicle Printables and Montessori-Inspired Construction Vehicle ActivitiesBy Deb Chitwood from Living Montessori Now

Happy Father's Day! In honor of the holiday, I'm featuring a popular theme with males ... construction vehicles. Of course, construction vehicles are popular with many girls, too. Today, I've created some Montessori-inspired construction vehicle activities using free printables.

You'll find many activities for preschoolers through first graders throughout the year along with presentation ideas in my previous posts at PreK + K Sharing. You'll find ideas for using free printables to create activity trays here: How to Use Printables to Create Montessori-Inspired Activities

I also have a post at Living Montessori Now with resource links of Free Printables for Montessori Homeschools and Preschools.

Matching Cards and Construction Vehicles

  Construction Vehicle Matching Tray

For this activity, I used the free Construction Site Vehicle Match Up Printable from Every Star Is Different. My now-adult son loved his Micro Machines from childhood and saved all of them even though he only saved a few Hot Wheels. The construction vehicles in this post are all Micro Machines, although you could use any small construction vehicles.

I used a medium-sized tray from Montessori Services for the activity and a hemmed work rug for the layout. You could have your child match the three-part cards similar to the activity in my Montessori-Inspired Music Appreciation: Peter and the Wolf post, or you could do a simple layout like this or even one with the images and no words.

Construction Vehicle Matching Layout

Construction Vehicle Magnifying Matching Activity

  Construction Vehicle Magnifying Matching Activity

This activity was super easy to put together. I just had to print and cut out the Construction Vehicle Magnifying Match Game by Erin Horn. Then I simply added a magnifying glass to create a simple but appealing activity.

Cement Mixer Cutting and Pasting Tray

Cement Mixer Cutting and Pasting Tray

This was another super-easy-to-prepare activity. I used the free Construction Vehicles Cut and Paste from KidSparkz and the Cutting Strips from C is for Cement Mixer by Royal Baloo.

I added scissors and glue to create two simple cut-and-paste activities with added interest for many children who resist working on cutting skills with other topics.

Cement Mixer Number Tracing

Cement Mixer Number Tracing Tray

If you have a miniature cement mixer, this is another very simple activity to prepare. This activity uses the Trace the 3′s from C is for Cement Mixer by Royal Baloo. I added a green control label to each number to show where the child should start tracing.

The large 3 would work well as a road for the cement mixer. The child could trace each of the other 3's with his or her finger.

Dump Truck Counting Activity

  Dump Truck Counting Tray
This uses the Dump Truck Counting Mats from The Measured Mom, a wooden tray from Michaels craft store, a candle coaster to hold the numerals, a Montessori Services basket, and Spielgaben wooden cubes.

You'll find a number of different ideas of materials to load and count in the post from The Measured Mom. I used the counting cards and wooden cubes for numbers 1-20, but you could use 1-10 or even 1-5, depending on the age and ability level of your child or students.

Construction Movement and Reading Cards

Construction Movement and Reading Cards

This activity uses the Construction Movement Cards from Royal Baloo. I used a a Montessori Services basket (small willow basket, which is a great size for many card materials).

You could make this into a phonetic reading activity by using only the CVC cards (and maybe adding the other phonetic cards). If you have children at more than one level, you could have a reader read the cards for the other children to act out. Or the activity could simply be a movement activity where you read the cards for the child or children to act out.

Montessori-Inspired Transportation Math Activities Using Free Printables

Free Transportation Printables and Montessori-Inspired Transportation Math Activities By Deb Chitwood from Living Montessori Now

I'm a real fan of vehicle activities after watching my now-adult son's love of them when he was little. For all the preschool- through first grade vehicle lovers, I've created some transportation activities using free printables.

You'll find many activities for preschoolers through first graders throughout the year along with presentation ideas in my previous posts at PreK + K Sharing. You'll also find ideas for using free printables to create activity trays here: How to Use Printables to Create Montessori-Inspired Activities

I also have a post at Living Montessori Now with resource links of Free Printables for Montessori Homeschools and Preschools.

Street Number Activity Street Number Activity

For this activity, I used the free Street Numbers for Block Center from Young & Lively Kindergarten. My son loved his Micro Machinesso much that he saved all of them even though he only saved a few Hot Wheels. The vehicles in this post are all Micro Machines, although you could use any small vehicles. I added a green color coding label where the child should start driving on each numeral.

Five Little Garbage Trucks Activity

Five Little Garbage Trucks Activity

This activity was super easy to put together. I just had to print and cut out the 5 garbage trucks and poem from the Garbage Truck Game Pack by Living Worldsapart. A reader could read the poem while another child acts it out with the garbage trucks, or the children could say the poem by memory while acting it out if it's been used at circle time.

You could also add sandpaper numerals to the activity, and trace the sandpaper numeral as you say the number in the poem. At Living Montessori Now, I have resources for inexpensive and DIY sandpaper numerals.

Transportation Number Puzzles
Transportation Number Puzzles

For the transportation puzzles, I used three of the free counting by 10s to 100 transportation puzzles from Selma Dawani. I cut off 1" of the page so that I could fit the puzzles into a pencil box. If you want to have 1-10 transportation puzzles rather than 1-100, you'll find that Royal Baloo's free 1-10 Transportation Puzzles from Zoomin Moving Alphabet Packs work especially well. They're already the right size to fit into the pencil boxes.

Racing Racecars

Racing Racecars

This activity uses the Free Racing Racecars from Mama Jenn. I had to check out Mama Jenn's printable after reading that this was the favorite activity of Renae's children (from Every Star is Different) in their racing vehicles week. I can see why it was so popular!

I used glass gems for the markers. There would be a die on the tray as well. I added the 1st through 6th place ribbons by doing a Google search of sports ribbons and printing out ribbons from one of the pages. I thought that would be a fun way to emphasize the ordinal numbers for 1st through 6th place.

I love activities like this to teach sportsmanship and cooperation. See my post at Living Montessori Now called "How to Use Cooperative Games to Teach Sportsmanship." This is a perfect activity to use as a cooperative game where children take turns rolling the die and moving the appropriate numbered vehicle. The vehicles are the ones racing, so the children are working together to see which vehicle wins, which comes in second, and so on.

How Many Trucks in the Mud? Monster Truck Addition
How Many Trucks in the Mud? Monster Truck Addition Activity

This uses a fun monster truck printable from 1+1+1=1. There's an easier version for counting the number of trucks in the mud, but I used the addition printable for this activity.

How Many Trucks in the Mud Layout

Transportation Sudoku
Transportation Sudoku

Transportation Sudoku from DLTK’s Crafts for Kids has an easy version and a more difficult version. The more difficult version, which is pictured, would work well for kindergarteners or first graders.
