It is Flag Day, June 14th! I always try to include a book with my posts, and the book I selected for my post today is RED, WHITE AND BLUE, by Debbie Clement. This book and music CD won the 2011 Indie Excellence Book Awards (Red, White and Blue).
Book and music CD by Debbie Clement, Children’s Book and Audio Award, 2011
Debbie Clement (the owner of this blog) is the author and illustrator of this children’s book! This is the perfect book for any patriotic holiday such as Flag Day, the 4th of July, and also 9-11. Debbie listened to the final version of her song on a 4th of July drive while watching fireworks. She is quoted as saying, “I was elated to hear it with such a backdrop of patriotic artistry.” Debbie is an energetic and talented singer, songwriter, artist, performer, and writer. She visits schools and leads music assemblies across the United States, and for children of our armed forces overseas. It took her five years of intensive work to make the quilts which are the illustrations for the pages of this fabulous book. She writes the blog, RAINBOWS WITHIN REACH, as well.
Made for 9-11, the representational quilt illustrations show firefighters, purple mountains, military uniforms, buildings in New York City, and more. The illustrations are child-friendly which seems to be difficult to do given the theme, but Debbie Clement has made this book perfect for children. Historical information about the flag is provided at the end of the book. Also included are a music notation and sign language pages. The book could be shared with children of any age. Debbie worked on this book while also dealing with cancer, which is another tribute to the American spirit.
I made a free math game with a patriotic theme for use from Flag day through July 4th. It is free and 27 pages, and will open right here!
In this game when matching a card for 6, another card with six cents, 6 tallies, or 6 items would fit. The game can be played different ways and directions are included.
See Debbie's video which shows the entire book, explains the quilts, and is only about 5 and 1/2 minutes!
Thanks for reading, Carolyn from The Wise Owl Factory

ReplyDeleteWhat a kindness. You are such a joy and a blessing in my life on so many levels. The patience that you have with me in the midst of my technological toddlerhood is simply precious, but to come here this morning to find this incredible overview is heart-boggling.
I can't wait to pin your print-ables -- which are always so far beyond brilliant and so very generous. You are such a kind-heart and everyone who finds your work is empowered as a result.
Consider yourself hugged.
